NetNewMusic is devoted to all types of new music. It had about 3,000 members. But there were two groups of members,as I understand it, that were always fighting each other so it was taken off-line. It may be rebuilt.

Hello Norbert. Welcome! The forums used to be a bit more active but not anymore. I updated the forum a couple of months ago with the hope that people would come again and chat. Let's see what happens. I see that you are interested in electronic music, it would be great if you stick around...if you have some friends that want to join also, even better :)
I think we have around 100 registered members, but most of them are not active anymore.

What is NatNewMusic? I've never heard of it. And why is it offline?

I've been checking out macprovideo.com. It looks like a very good site with tons of information. They have various types of subscription options and I'm tempted to try the $25 per month one. I will probably try the free one first, where they let you check out 10% of each tutorial. Not bad. Have any of you guys heard about this site? Check out the Apple Logic section here: http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorials/logic

I'm pretty much learning how to use Logic now, but I've found that the brass sounds are the worse. Do you have any tips for working with sampled brass sounds?

I have to agree with you fontadoni, the Apple ones are really good, especially if you keep swapping between different articulations e.g. legato and staccato.
If you write lots of sustained notes/ chords, you can get away with JUST sampled strings. It's where the melody notes move quickly that samples fall down. I'm lucky here because I play violin and viola so I overdub some real strings and mix them in with the samples - just enough to confuse the listener ;-)

For what it's worth, I use music publisher on my pc. It's not the 500lb gorilla of this arena, but for my money, it's very fast, and ease of use is high. It's at muspub.com.

It has simple playback, but is essentially a notation-only program.

What is twelve tone?

I think the limits are endless. Current trends will always stay around for the majorities. For the mainstream, I have no idea. But as long as it is listenable, it works for me.

The thing is there's always going to be all sorts of trends, whether they are revivalist or post-currentageist. Personally, I like to listen to music that has been done in the past, because it is, as it has always been, a possible reflection of the future. A song that was made today will become a song that was made yesterday, and so on.

Either way, I find it very interesting that whatever taste people have, it's always the same themes, all the time.

Casey and fonta pretty much covered all I could think of.

You might want to try to sing with your voice along the piano, or just when you're doing mechanical activities (IE driving, or whatever) just so you build a stronger musical sense.

Improvisation is great, too. Do it at random moments during the day.

Listen to CaseyDodd, basically.

As for books, I have dozens on my wishlist, but two that have helped me transcendentally are:

1. Composing Music: A New Approach (William Russo)
2. The Chord Wheel (Jim Fleser)

These are individual approaches. If you're seriously serious about music, start by playing with someone else. It's surprising what two people can do on the piano at the same time, and the music that is created.
Hello fontadoni!

Thank you for your reply!

Well, as you see, I have pasted a screenshot from one of my modules.
The game is delivered with an application called Aurora Engine. With this program you can use all the codes in the game, and add graphics, sound and scripts. It is not open source, you cannot alter the exe file. But this engine makes you able to make new storylines and environments. The music can be added to your scenes as you please, just by adding them to the different areas. You can script it so that the music changes when certain things happen. You use mp3 files, you just have to convert them to .bmu, the format that the game use. That is really no problem, you just change the fileextention.

I use Finale, latest version, with Garritan Personal Orchestra, these sounds are as you probabely know included in Finale now.
To edit my audiofiles I am using Sony Soundforge. A very easy to use mastering program, that lets me compress and add reverb and so on.

Hope I have answered some of your questions. I will most likely be back soon with more filelinks and stuff.
Talk to you soon! :D

Hi Ilusa, welcome to the forum!

I think Casey has given you great advice, I really have nothing to add to that except that it's also important to be consistent. Putting yourself to a schedule and following it is good.

I wish I was more disciplined. This is one of the things I've always tried to change.

Brahms had some useful advice for aspiring composers. I think we can say that these "rules" are valid today as well in the past and future? :D
Welcome yerik, it's good to have you here.

I'm a 30 year old electric guitarist and composer from Costa Rica, but currently living in Massachusetts, USA. My interests are mainly in contemporary classical music, electronic music and jazz, although I still listen to a lot of pop and rock as well.

Thanks for posting the mp3, sounds really good! What program are you using to generate sound? It would be very interesting to hear it along with the game, just to hear it in context. I am not familiar with the game (I am not very familiar with video games in general), but it sounds like it's a very complex one. I was not aware that it was possible to mod video games, is this like an open source video game or something similar?

I used Finale for a long time, but switched to Sibelius after a music copying job I had to do, and I have to say they both have good and bad things. I think once you master one of them it's probably a good idea to stick with it. But I do wish there was a more flexible notation application out there.

What program do you use to synchronize the audio and video. I have recently purchased Apple Logic Studio (I am really glad I did). It's a great program (now I have to learn how to use it, ha ha).

I am glad you found the site and I hope you keep coming back, I am the owner. I have not done anything with it for a long time. I tried really hard for a while, but it has been difficutl to get people interested, so I stopped trying.

We'll be relaunching the site with a slightly different concept and look soon, more technically oriented to computers, software, etc. One of the persons who will be working with me is really talented with music applications so I'm sure that will make a difference.

Coming back to your topic, do you have any screenshots of the scenes you are orchestrating? Post them if you do.

Talk to you soon.

Hello!
I have just found this forum. Looks interesting, and I´m a little amazed that so few have responded to it. I´m a 48 year old musician from Norway. I have done a lot of things, from conducting schoolbands to play in rock and jazzbands. I have arranged a lot of music. But my main interest nowadays is to write music for the PC game Neverwinternights. This is a rolepaying game with a fantastic utility where you can make your own mods. You can write new stories, script them, add new sounds and music. I think it´s unnessecary to say that writing soundtracks for games has become a big buissness nowadays. That´s why I´m a little surprised that no one has posted anything here yet. Well maybe we can do something about that. I will shortly come back with some links to some works I have done for this game. I´m using Finale for this work. Not because I will claim that this is the best program, but because I have used it since the 90´ees!
Hope to get in touch with a lot of you soon! :D

Hi Ilusa, welcome to the Forum.

From my experience, the best way for me to learn composition has just been through trial and error. I sit down at the piano every chance I get and I just improvise, just to see what I can come up with. If I think there's anything worth saving, I'll record it/write it down and work on expanding my ideas later. This is a good method of composition for me and it's certainly worked for a lot of Classical composers along the way.

Another important tip I would have is to listen to the kinds of composers/kinds of music that you want to compose. If you would like to compose dark piano ballads, check out how the great composers composed piano music and try to emulate them. Try to figure out what it is that they did that made their music so great and incorporate that stuff into your own writing.

I hope some of what I said has helped and I look forward to your work! Keep us posted.

Hi everyone =) I'm new here.

I've done alot of theroy lessons and have taken years of lessons in piano and singing. I really want to compose and I have written part of a song bu ever an entire one, I just don't really know how to go about composition. Do you think books are the best ways to do this? If so could anyone reccomend some? I'd really love to write my own music as I don't want to be a singer who just sings other people's works I want to be able to write music that is personal to me. The piece I wrote is a piano piece which I later added vocal and lyrics to but like i said it's pretty much unfinished =(.
I have an intrest in contemporary writing classical pieces but also more modern music styles rock/pop songs(that are well composed), I think to start out I'd like to compose dark piano ballads.

Dear Anyone.

I have Reason, 1 gig RAM, an AMD Sempron computer which is just fast enough to run Reason properly.

I'm a complete noob, let's get that out of the way for starters. I flatter myself I can write a tune, but the techie side of computer music is killing me and sniggering heartily throughout the process. Anyway. Today's dumbass question.

I wanna write simple New Age music for now - flute'n'strings, piano'n'strings, think Richard Clayderman, people like that. If you listen to a piano and strings piece, the strings are lovely and soft and buzzy in the background. Like saying MMMMM as a chord.

Problem is, doesn't matter which Reason sample I use - I only have the two basic sets, Orkester and Factory, that come with the program - it sounds too harsh. I've tried loading on the reverb, it just sounds like an overdose of reverb, it doesn't sound soft. Not like the online New Age backings sound soft.

How do you get those lovely, soft, New Age backings you hear on piano and synth/strings tracks? What samples should I use and what should I be doing to them to achieve the softness?

Once I've achieved softness I'll prob. have a couple more question to ask, but this soft thing is a real stumbling block for me. Like a six foot brick wall!

Yours hopefully

1) All the time. In fact, at this point in my life as an aspiring composer, I would say I have those days more often than I have good days.

2) I definitely don't have a set routine when it comes to composition. In order for the ideas to stay fresh, it IS important to come at them from different points of view (and different points during the day).

3) Improvisation is definitely important. I don't think improvisation is necessarily in between steps 1 and 3. Many great composers sat down at a piano and improvised and then used THAT material to build their pieces. It definitely can be just as formal of a process as just sitting there trying to write from scratch.

4) Awesome improv certainly can be a result of your knowledge of learned rules, but at the same time it is a result of instinct and quick musical wit.

5) I don't necessarily agree that too much freedom can become a hindrance. I would agree that sometimes when you have total freedom it's hard to know what to do, but I think with careful thought and planning, the freedom is where you can really achieve your greatest work. What if Wagner decided he had too much freedom? We wouldn't have heard any of his incredibly revolutionary sounds.

6) I think you should definitely submit your compositions. I would like to start doing the same. Do you work with a program like Finale or Sibelius?
